I do think it’s wrapped up in politics. 6 foot distancing always felt more like a compromise between public health and economy than a heuristic based on health alone.

OTOH, early on there was a lot of mask theater where people would not do any distancing and there were still many indoor activities where people had masks in their hand, around their neck. Feeling “invincible” while carrying a mask was a real thing putting everyone at risk.

I frankly dismissed those people as stupid. I’m much more risk-averse on health stuff than average I think, so I was happy to worst-case the science as a precaution personally before it settled. But it seemed clear it was going to land there.
