what kind of fucks me up about fiction is that things dont have infinite depth or w/e like u see a car in a fictional universe and it's just a platonic ideal car there isnt a long history behind its creation. but the other tendency to write an entire library of lore is bad too

OTOH when you write “the blue car turned into the driveway” you’re evoking imagery in reader’s head that’s a mashup up of all blue cars and driveways they’ve seen. It’s not real but it does have a deeper history than what the writer puts in. The writer points, the reader sees.

to put it another way the world of a fictional universe is a yesman. they'll take any interpretation you throw at it. but reality will speak up against you

There’s the cliche tho about characters taking on a life of their own and fighting writers. Asimov wrote a story based on the idea. There’s something there. The inner logic of a story isn’t as rich as reality but it’s not a slave to reader or writer either https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Author!_Author!_(short_story) …

The characters can become their own agents on the minds of people if psychologically sophisticated enough. They might be like our mind’s models of other people. We might even identify with these simulations and take on their traits and values.
