what kind of fucks me up about fiction is that things dont have infinite depth or w/e like u see a car in a fictional universe and it's just a platonic ideal car there isnt a long history behind its creation. but the other tendency to write an entire library of lore is bad too

OTOH when you write “the blue car turned into the driveway” you’re evoking imagery in reader’s head that’s a mashup up of all blue cars and driveways they’ve seen. It’s not real but it does have a deeper history than what the writer puts in. The writer points, the reader sees.

yes but the difference is the fictional world exists to be projected onto but reality is constantly confounding and contradicting. it's obvious that our history is wrong and incomplete because of the infinite detail that seeps out from places we inhabit

to put it another way the world of a fictional universe is a yesman. they'll take any interpretation you throw at it. but reality will speak up against you
