I have no idea how to test this but I suspect that that there is a strong correlation between number of history books someone has read and how moderate their opinions are. History is a list of simplistic ideologies failing to work as promised over and over again.

Hmm. I think it depends on the randomness of the reading. Several ideologues seem to do motivated reading to boost their ideologies. Like people who are unusually well-informed on US Civil War history but know very of any other place or time.

I think it has more to do with the attitude of the reader. Many history books I read years ago were random and varied but only ideas that fit my worldview were retained while the rest was dismissed as coincidence. It takes an open mind to learn from history imo
