For all those suggesting a smartphone... that’s not the base tool so much as the base compute+comms backend. More handle than business-end. Looking for sensor/actuator type suggestions. Or specialist comms /compute like R2D2 socket probe or a lock-pick/code-break thing.

That’s more the processing base not tool. Tool would be a sensor and/or actuator.

Low tech + high tech, something like: Digital angle finder, laser level, digital caliper. Archetype, not those actual things. Or maybe that "take a picture and I'll tell you what it is" type function.

do you want a visual component? then yes, a smartphone or monocle. but if you're a haptic-first kinda designer... a glove. feel the things you find, their textures and differences and activity. manipulate with feedback. maybe brass knuckles. or, if held, a foil's Belgian grip.
