It’s actually an economic effect similar to opening up trade. For a while, until you have exhausted globally undistributed wealth separated by comparative advantage barriers, there’s more value in trade than innovation. Smithian over Schumpeterian growth as Joel Mokyr calls it.

Books have had a back catalog bias always. But even there I’d guess it’s increased.
