🎶 Woke up with a start in the middle of the night realizing I hadn’t heard anything about music since 2015. Nobody tweets about it any more hardly, nothing in my other feeds. Did music just die five years ago? 😵 Am I more out of touch than I thought? What does this MEAN??

Just a more extreme version of what happened to tv. Once you go on-demand streaming it is cheaper for everybody to discover music that’s _new to them_ than for musicians to make music that’s new for everybody. Discourse dies because most points were already made when it was new.

It’s actually an economic effect similar to opening up trade. For a while, until you have exhausted globally undistributed wealth separated by comparative advantage barriers, there’s more value in trade than innovation. Smithian over Schumpeterian growth as Joel Mokyr calls it.
