Just got a bit of a ringside peek at the far-right crazymaking industrial complex, and wow is it crazy. I only saw the Hawking radiation effects from outside the event but the headspace inside the black hole has to be utter insanity.

The big sign to watch for is what looks like a slightly more persistent concern trolling. It’s a sign you’re a few meme leaps away from an entire blackhole where those “concerns” have been developed into a fantasy extended universe.

The fascinating thing about dealing with degenerate wingnut discourses is that they exploit normal kinds of benefits of doubt it is safe to extend to basically anybody. Like “take trump seriously but not literally” was not a bad principle... applied to anyone except trumpies.

When you take to severely abusing language for hostile use, all the normal non-literal aspects become suspect: allegory, irony, jokes, wordplay, any sort of figurative speech, it all has to be suspended. That stuff is for people with enough mutual trust to talk like humans.

When dealing with wingnuts, you have to use language in “safe mode.” Either keep it absolutely simple, literal, and precise, OR go for over-the-top heavily labeled/hashtagged figurative speech. Any unspoken subtext/context WILL be exploited in a maximally hostile way.

Another big sign is a kind of hyper-rationality inside a bubble. Every wingnut fantasy entails a closed inferential space with a weird axiomatic basis. If you hear “Soros,” for eg, just walk away. The discourse is past an uncrossable event horizon past which light cannot escape.
