I’m sympathetic to the terrible plight of the folks on the west coast. I hope a strong resolve emerges to perform the necessary controlled burns and fire break clearings to have the biggest & most immediate preventative impact.

Unfortunately the majority of wildfires in the West—including the largest and most deadly—happen on federal land, so it isn’t driven by local policy. fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/I

As we talk about these fires, one thing that comes up often is the fire history of these places & how long it has been since the land burned. I find it helpful to map this, so I put together some quick recent fire history maps of several of the current CA fires. (thread)
