“Leaping on every fire and putting it out immediately is the practice that helped create the problem in the first place.” “Coupled with sediment studies, they show that big fires have been a constant presence on the landscape for at least 11,000 years”

I’m sympathetic to the terrible plight of the folks on the west coast. I hope a strong resolve emerges to perform the necessary controlled burns and fire break clearings to have the biggest & most immediate preventative impact.

Unfortunately the majority of wildfires in the West—including the largest and most deadly—happen on federal land, so it isn’t driven by local policy. https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/IF10244.pdf …

And the average quantity of burned land post-2000 is double the average in the 90s. So recent practice should be cycling out the older, denser forest.

Unfortunately, the fires remain large, despite the fires covering a few percent of California’s total land area each year for the last 20 years.

I’d be interested to see a map of the burned areas that makes it easy to distinguish areas that have burned multiple times since 2000 vs only once, but this is still interesting:pic.twitter.com/isxnEOTJmi

As we talk about these fires, one thing that comes up often is the fire history of these places & how long it has been since the land burned. I find it helpful to map this, so I put together some quick recent fire history maps of several of the current CA fires. (thread)
