I have no problem with reality falsifying my beliefs but I really don’t like my fiction rotation cache being invalidated by new historical moods. I don’t think I can enjoy Yes, Prime Minister or The Simpsons ever again. Even Hitchhiker’s Guide is under threat now.

Isn't it possible that some stuff becomes more classic because of the change in mood? No recommendations as yet, but seems possible.

Back on the Asimov train then? Foundation might be a bit of a downer right now. Robots? I'm dipping into fantasy these days. First Dresden Files was fun. Short, noir, funny, nerd wizard in Chicago.

I think Use of Weapons has to be the most wordy and wandering Culture book. It's brilliant in its way but yeah, Long. Player of Games and Matter are lighter, and Surface Detail is in between but super fun.

Realised just now, 'State of the Art' might be a good choice for you. Short and deep in 70s sci-fi references, it's the Culture visiting Earth and deciding whether to make contact. My highlight was a character wearing Kirk's uniform, waving a lightsaber and running for captain.
