Something that I personally find frustrating about engineering is that people don’t distinguish between things that are necessary bc of physical/mathematical laws, things that are necessary for sociopolitical reasons and things that are just random arbitrary conventions.

E.g. if you open a book on gears, they’ll probably only talk about involute gears and never address “why are gears involute?” and “do gears have to be involute?”.

This is not true. You’ll typically find a discussion of why it’s involute, and most instructors will cover it. In my experience engineering pedagogy is pretty good about distinguishing arbitrary from non-arbitrary. Where it often fails is distinguishing sufficient/necessary.
