Last I looked this up it seemed like all the AQIs are pulling from essentially the same instrument design that is pretty off the shelf and is a discrete component you can buy. There are a few instrument variants iirc tho, and not all of them measure all what you want sometimes

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DL1M46J … It uses the same sensor as the PurpleAir (although the purpleair has two), and you have to plug it into a USB power bank, and there's no internet connectivity. It works fine for letting me know that the filters are working properly.

Even if you can get cheap sensors, calibration is an issue. Unfortunately the words "cheap" and "air quality sensors" aren't found together much.
