I suspect pure solar needs much cheaper land, like out in the desert near Vegas where I’ve seen a few. Dead malls probably need to be redeveloped into something else + solar. Especially in low sunlight regions.

This can't be true. Prime farm land in Western Mass, where I cannot afford to live, is be converted to solar arrays. Orchards razed. I suspect state subsidy. Central NY is the same. Your rural reporter.

Yes I suspect subsidies, especially in MA... Or solar panels are the new parking lots. A way to stem losses while you think of a better idea.

But unlike fracking it won’t ruin the land itself I think, just leaves it fallow for a while? But yeah if you’re not in a desert, I’d think farming would have better returns than solar 🤔
