Yeah he was an unpleasant asshole but if he hadn’t been caught, he’d just have exited history as a normal, crappy president and a product of his times. He doesn’t appear to have been unfit for the job at basic competence level of even knowing how the government works and his role

Yeah. I’m reading the first volume of Caro’s LBJ bio right now. And the degree to which bold-faced election fraud was just totally universal in 1941 (not to mention earlier) is a good reminder. But there was still a sense of a unified national project (as long as you were white).
