randomly remembered how I spent ages 14-16 trying to come up with a good Google Science Fair project, couldn't think of anything, eventually became convinced that I'm a complete idiot, and years later learned that all the winners had university professors "helping" with projects

the contrast between my ideas and what I saw the winners doing also probably contributed to my years-long depression in high school. could not have imagined that it was all fake. oh, my sweet-sweet childhood

The same thing happened to me in my high school science fair. I did a rinky-dink project on gears and gear ratios (using Legos). I went to the county level and saw all these kids doing actual scientific research using actual scientific equipment and it was devastating.

Saw this myself when I competed in high school, but it was biotech. The profs who do this are doing it to put on their CV usually, since promoting junior people in research gets lots of funding agency points (the more junior and more "productive", the better).
