Why do we say, in English, West Bengal but never Pashchim(a) Bengal? Why do we say Uttar Pradesh but never North Pradesh?

So why wasn’t West Bengal “backronymed” like the other states?

Because the East was in another country that split off and changed its name from East Pakistan to Bangladesh? It wasn’t an absolute location like UP but relative. Interestingly Punjab didn’t bother. Both India and a Pakistan call their provinces Punjab. Not West and East Punjab.
