it actually is very funny, albeit eyeroll-worthy, to watch the thinkfluencers launder NRx ideas into the intellectual mainstream like "I made this!" so illuminating when I discovered a couple of years ago that all the smart think-tank people read the naughty bloggers you love

I've just had an amazing original insight. Has anyone considered the possibility that modern Wokeness might be a memetic descendant of Puritanism? Think about it, there are so many similarities! White Privilege <--> Original Sin Lived experience <--> Self Revelation

Meh. Autodidacts vastly overestimate the originality of their insights. Most insights occur to many people independently. If you act sufficiently impressed with yourself, people will assume the insight is less trivial than it is.

Seems like a fairly trivial observation. Not sure anyone needs to claim credit for it. On par with “decline of US rhymes with decline of Rome”

I often think a thought, discard it as “obviously trivial and will occur to anyone who spends 10 minutes on this”, and don’t bother sharing it... only to find someone a couple of years later writing a very self-impressed thing about it. Autodidacts land there a lot.

So I’d be wary of assuming that simply because your subculture discovered an idea in one place, so did everybody else. Some may have. But unless you’re talking “theory of relativity” level non-triviality, the null hypothesis is that there’s many rediscoveries, most unreported.
