@chenoehart is there supposed to be yellow tape on this build platform? Manual says so but I just unpacked and it looks like black coated metalpic.twitter.com/mgW7mvrRrl

No, they mean the build platform. It might be an old line of text. A lot of build platforms now are made out of better materials so you don't have to put sacrificial tape on it.

Either that black material is the build surface, or you need to put some tape on it. Hopefully it's the former. You can just try printing and see if the plastic adheres. It's not unusual to have to experiment to find the right combination of settings and materials to print well

I saw a couple of videos with people printing directly on that black surface and an official one saying that's fine but it will wear out... so will probably do my test prints on it, and then cover it with the tape I just ordered

It’s the build surface. I haven’t had much trouble getting prints to adhere to it without tape (the heated bed helps with that), but I’ll second the comment about experimenting with temperature settings, especially since different filament colors print at different temperatures.

My build plate has some minor wear on it after 3 years, but I don’t know how much of it was caused by accidental nozzle strike incidents which would have gone through the tape in any event. They haven’t impacted the functionality of the heating.

the kapton tape seems like useful stuff to have around in any case... seems like it's used in some electronics builds too, which I might be getting into next

Do you have a portfolio page with your builds btw? I'm starting to make notes on what I want to print. I have a couple of random simple spare part type things I want to do first, then it's open-canvas season.

I'm in the process of updating my portfolio now. I've mostly used it to fabricate assemblies within architecture-related models, such as the grey joints holding this structural study together or the game pieces for my conceptual board game exercise you may have seen before.pic.twitter.com/gzQH6T4D7W
