Thinking about desks I've had over the years. I had an actual L-shaped desk for home office for several years (I think 2004-09) and 2 cheap desks in L-config for several more years. Single desk for the last year. Now going back to L with a twist: second leg will be a workbench.

Last year while I was at Berggruen, I had proper standing desk with motorized top. Sweet. These run like $600 now for decent ones I think. Since Covid, I've been back to one of my 2 cheapo Ikea desks I've had for 8 years ( had both in L-config in Seattle, wife has other one now)

But since I mostly worked out of Starbucks for the last decade, the functionality of the desk didn't actually matter much. It was mostly storage/inboxes and short periods of sitting/use. But now it's very heavy use, so 1 desk is not enough room. Need 2 in L or other mode.

But this time, I'm strongly considering buying a heavier workbench type deal for the second leg. I have my eye on this really nice looking thing. Haven't worked at a proper lab/workshop style workbench in decades, since grad school.https://www.amazon.com/UltraHD-Lighted-Workcenter-Satin-Graphite/dp/B00WNOUKCO/ref=psdc_553602_t1_B019K7O5FY …

Or possibly this (leaning towards narrow since I don't have that much room and need to keep large area clear for VR stuff)https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KBW4377/

This is my null hypothesis option... cheapo narrow desk as second L instead of proper workbench. Particle board crap that will probably crack if I try to do something like hammer something on it, but probably good enough for small hobby-scale assembly etc.https://www.amazon.com/Furinno-14035EX-Study-Table-Espresso/dp/B00NIYX9LC/ …

Oh hmm... standing desks have gotten much cheaper since I last looked, by like 50%... so these are in the $300 range now 🤔 Still, I think I need to get off the desk vector and onto the workbench vectorhttps://www.amazon.com/Electric-Stand-Desk-Frame-Workstation/dp/B07LCPQS15/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=standing+desk&qid=1597782673&sr=8-6 …

Major medium-is-the-message moment here. If I go workbench, it means my life is pivoting. Currently my tool stuff is an overstuffed toolbox shoved into the hall closet, plus a cordless drill and a few shoeboxes of junk. It's basically in /etc folder of life.

My current strategy: wall mount a giant monitor and then go tiny desk. Just big enough for the keyboard and mouse, minimise mess to clear up. But then, I know you favour actual paper for thinking. Wall mounting the monitor does free up desk space for paper. :)
