Had a bit of an epiphany trying to generalize leadership learning curves across types of leadership contexts. The thing about VC funded tech startups is that the learning curve is steepest, but it’s heavily underdamped so you have to unlearn/relearn a lot.

In my experience, no. The big company experience is usually a liability in the fast growth context because they are unwilling to unlearn/relearn levels multiple times. Big reason why transplants from big to startup often fail.

Yeah I agree for the most part but I think it has its own curve :). Ie 2-4 years helps with startup as long as it doesn’t make you risk averse and it’s in a well run company. Anything more is a net negative.

Huge part comes down to attitude. 2 extremes are "I'm from big company and here to teach you kids how to run real companies" and "I a a burnout resentful refugee from big corp and I couldn't cut it so I'm here for a redemption story".... both are set ups for failure.
