Feels like 80% of mechanical diy complexity comes from clamps, holders, jigs, and fixtures to hold things in position with the right accuracy, tension, rigidity etc. It’s like tactile transhumanism. Extensions of opposable thumbs. Level 2 is moving (tracking) in the right motions

that 80% number is about right: in manufacturing school we did a class that was basically just 'how to affix things in 3D space, and why it's harder than you think'
incidentally why I think a cheap 3D printer is actually the most useful woodworking tool: solid, accurate jigs

as it relates to the hobbyist that's a great question: I can refer you to textbooks, but I think they're a pretty dry read and focused primarily on big factory machines (both for producing and using the workholder)
