Leaders *must* create reality distortion fields to lead effectively. A good RDF is a minimum-viable noble lie.

I think that’s fair. If I can’t lead in a way that is a net benefit for my team, I need further introspection.

For further insight into the possibility of positive leadership, I highly recommend reading John Wooden’s autobiography. His success in coaching was a byproduct of his brilliance and his intensely ethical approach to leadership.
