Because they record deaths differently, e.g. https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/canada-covid-cases-1.5620080 … The US has one of the most broad criteria for covid deaths, combine with incentives for hospitals to label deaths as covid. Doesn't necessarily explain entire diff, but big factor.
