I still don't get the point of Substack. What can it do that you can't do with Wordpress and a few plugins, besides limit your control, customization, and monetization? Also its default (only?) font is ugly.

If you just want to make a no-frills newsletter with low barriers-to-entry, I get it. Though if your goal is to make money, there's zero excuse to not create your own simple blog/ landing page and keep 100% of your subscription revenue.

You’re way underestimating the time/effort it takes to keep a robust diy substitute going (WordPress+Mailchimp+Memberful is the basic stack and none of the components is free). 10% is steep, but worth it until you get fairly big. And porting later when ready isn’t hard.

I actually tried doing this briefly and it was so annoying and janky I gave up. Substack is legit value. It’s a business and they’re not saintly in their terms, but acceptable.
There’s also a 3rd party service that helps you use your own domain.
