I still don't get the point of Substack. What can it do that you can't do with Wordpress and a few plugins, besides limit your control, customization, and monetization? Also its default (only?) font is ugly.

If you just want to make a no-frills newsletter with low barriers-to-entry, I get it. Though if your goal is to make money, there's zero excuse to not create your own simple blog/ landing page and keep 100% of your subscription revenue.

You’re way underestimating the time/effort it takes to keep a robust diy substitute going (WordPress+Mailchimp+Memberful is the basic stack and none of the components is free). 10% is steep, but worth it until you get fairly big. And porting later when ready isn’t hard.
I actually tried doing this briefly and it was so annoying and janky I gave up. Substack is legit value. It’s a business and they’re not saintly in their terms, but acceptable.
There’s also a 3rd party service that helps you use your own domain.

Ya but like I said that makes sense if it's just a hobby or side hustle, but if its your main source of income or intended to be a full blown publication, those upfront costs are trivial.

Trivial to you perhaps. Not to most people. And outsourcing to a human would cost more and require managerial labor.
The point of money is to avoid doing the things you don’t care to. I’m fine giving up some revenue for convenience. Not everybody is in it for maximizing return.
