Two thoughts on hypocrisy 1. A lot of alleged hypocrisy is just glossed-over heterogeneity. People say, for example, it's hypocritical to be pro-life and pro-death penalty. But look closer and it's different people holding each stance (sometimes lol)

It’s not hypocrisy even in the same person. No reason to have a single consistent principle for both. You can apply 2 different principles to 2 different life vs death choices. It’s only double standards if 2 cases can’t be meaningfully distinguished except via self interest.

This is another big part of the story! Zooming out, it's funny that: Few people think they use double standards themselves, but lots of people think that others use double standards Why the difference? a. heterogeneity b. views more nuanced c. actual double standards

So yeah, in this thread I'm talking about a., heterogeneity, but you're right that, b., views are often actually nuanced enough that there's no hypocrisy or double standard And yeah, c., some people are employing double standards without admitting it to themselves
