Well endoscopes have active lighting going one way and the target is close enough for reflective illumination
Dunno. I’m now fairly confused. Digital is easy since it’s a light bitstream. This analog use case is tricky.

yeah weird i mean i thought a property of optical fibre was it would conduct whatever you put through it faithfully to the other side

I think I figured it out. Coherent fiber bundles can do what you think, but it’s 1 pixel/strand and they’re like 1mm cross section. I saw one device listed at 10k bundle (so 100x100).
