This is just not true. World trade as a fraction of GDP was simply not that high for most of history. It’s gone up by an order of magnitude in a few centuries. Like 5-50%. And historically no country had high-tech communist level control of its population ourworldindata.org/trade-and-glob

Chinese artisans produced goods found nowhere else, which political elites outside China were driven to monopolise, which meant trade routes to China were often the root of conflict.
China pre-Yuan still had a very high level of control over its populace without high tech.
