i pay a base rate of like 6¢ a kwh, so 2¢ spot is effectively 8¢ a kwh

my house uses about 9.3kw when both A/C units are running, so “flushing” the house for two hours will run me about $1.50 right now

of course I probably would have used 3-7kw an hour over the same time frame, because the A/C unit would have run sporadically anyway, so the real added expense is somewhere between 32-96¢

“isnt that bad for the environment?” hard to say really except that i know the worst times to use electricity is when the grid is hitting peak capacity, because that’s when they light up the fallback generation which is typically coal or something else that’s a heavy polluter

the fact that prices are low indicates that we’re well within standard capacity limits, and may very well mean that there’s surplus wind power coming in from west texas

there’s some definite downsides to being tied so closely to the grid (extremely expensive power when you most want to run the A/C ie middle of the afternoon on a scorcher)

but there’s some really fun upsides too!

if you’re going to switch to a variable rate provider, I’d highly recommend getting a
@Sense set up, which lets you see real-time electricity usage in your house
