In my college teaching experience, this was the format I enjoyed the most (with half a dozen undergrads for their senior thesis). On the receiving end, good PhD advising is essentially this and my own advisor was extremely good at it.

@teachable now has now introduced 1:1 coaching, would be a natural fit for what you are trying to do. https://teachable.com/blog/introducing-coaching-on-teachable?plan_id=7&=undefined … When it comes to small groups, would you prefer a group of people who know each other over randomly assigned individuals? -
I’d want the same small group to meet over time. Not random.

My understanding is that this model is built on having students complete some work prior, then discussing when you meet with them. Would you be doing this with assigned readings?

Didn’t enjoy lecturing much. The one time o designed and taught a lecture style course I made sure every 90 minute session was at least 45 minutes small group or pair workshopping style. It was more studio than course.

You could publish one course with common materials. Divide all students into Group A/B/C.. And set a time for each group to meet based on preferences you collect in the sign up form.

for a
@Kennedy_School exec ed course, the whole group met for lectures on Tuesdays and had small group sections on Thursdays based on their time zone preferences + our ideas for mixing up interesting people together. This was on Canvas with calendar+students assigned to groups - Show replies
