If Scott’s account is accurate, and I have no reason to doubt it, this seems like a purely arbitrary act of random violence.

What can be done about it? Any clout at NYT?

Afraid not

Consider other news sources with more journalistic integrity and responsibility for the craft. The Washington Post kept Mark Felt’s identity secret until he saw fit to reveal it. Of course, we may be past the era of responsible journalism and entirely into clickbait.
-
It seems to me that market incentives don’t exactly bring us 100% to thoughtful, effective, and sustainable journalism - for example, clickbait.

The Times has hired reporters with a history of doing this:https://medium.com/@therealsexycyborg/shenzhen-tech-girl-naomi-wu-my-experience-with-sarah-jeong-jason-koebler-and-vice-magazine-3f4a32fda9b5 …

What do you think was a motive here? Ideological disagreement (Scott is heterodox and not always liberal) or that he is competition for readers?
-
Scott was made of atoms that the NYT could use to make clickbait.

Idk, it's probably someone looking for scoops, and trying to psychoanalyze (ironic) online forums in an age of polarization and quarantine probably motivated the writer to dig deep. That isn't to say that the article was going to be in good or bad faith, journalists mess up too
