I don’t think I’ve ever made a decision based on optimization in my life 
meh, everything is a type of optimization if you are willing to squint enough, which makes it a tautological label... it's only interesting if there's a conscious process

Yeah ... agreed it was not a conscious optimization. Our 20-something old brains built mental models by lazily selecting based on global social preferences and (in my case, regret minimization) due to pariah status given to liberal arts majors.

Imma going to call it wimpy optimal. The desire or incentive to earnestly Follow your dreams™ tempered by risk/reward legibility and optimized on regret minimization. If I did have a choice, I would prolly have pursued History Major at St.Stephens
