90% of academia’s originality claims are no more than squatting on easily rediscovered trivia and attempting to derive rents from teminological seigniorage based on versions of ideas that aren’t actually as well-adapted to field use as field-rediscoveries.

Note: I’m not defending tech. It’s full of glaring flaws. I just think the ones acad HSS harps on aren’t among them, and those are in fact likely features rather than bugs. A good way to increase chance of success in tech is likely doing opposite of what they demand.

yeah the point about entangled analysis/application is spot on. the ideas that flourish in that closed off academic environment are optimized for success within that system, a totally different goal than being applicable
