“I cut the cake, you pick your half” is basically the only good political idea anyone has ever had. Everything else is either derived from that, or self-serving behavior dressed up to look like an idea.

Yeah, unfortunate thing about trying to apply the "I cut you choose" principle to things like gerrymandering is the nonfungibility of sections of (real life equiv of) cake. Which means it's possible to make an option that your opponent would have to choose but is still worse.
