Maybe there isn't a good precedent? The WWs inflicted much physical damage, but deaths were concentrated among younger men (some civilians too). Both had strong post-war booms. Spanish Flu and Black Death killed many more and younger people.

I'd say WW1 & Spanish Flu, since it lead to WW2 afterwards (implying that though the crisis was brought to close, it's resolution led to further turmoil). We need to to think in these terms to avoid a repeat & foster multilateral+ collaborative solutions.
