Prediction: superhero movies/comics will become unpopular and go through something of a recession/winter due to covid. They won’t bomb, but they’ll underperform and be a somewhat marginal genre for a decade.
Why: straightforward extrapolation from WW2.
Conversation
After WW2 a mix of reactionary+realist genres rose to prominence. Wiki: “publishers diversified into other genres, such as war, Westerns, science fiction, romance, crime and horror. Many superhero titles were cancelled or converted to other genres.” So...?

That said I predict Wonder Woman 2 will be a hit since it happens to also be an 80s nostalgia movie. So might the stand-alone Nick Fury.
Interesting to try and predict which periods will be most popular nostalgia-wise. I think 80s because X’ers. Older = boomers = tainted.

I'd argue that MCU already operates in this area. A lot of its successes have been about adapting classic Hollywood staples into its comfy, inoffensive mold.

It's a good point. The acid trips of the late '60s were followed by the gritty realist dramas of the '70s in the wake of Vietnam; there will be a need for people to process their emotions through art forms, film will be one.
