Starting to wonder if the world is fixable. Just endless problems everywhere you look, and mostly just cringe morale-booster ads on the other side celebrating people fighting rearguard actions 🤔
Lol ok. I’m sure people who lived during many previous crises thought the same thing... World War II, Black Death, numerous famines. What makes this fine period uniquely hard over all those?
I’m not trying to sugarcoat... we’ve been dining out on fossil fuels for way too long and the bill is coming due fast. But I believe in humanity’s capacity to endure and overcome.
“But I believe in humanity’s capacity to endure and overcome.” <— cringe morale booster ad 😂
I personally don’t feel the need to reassure myself with statistics. I’m fine staying gloomy until real options emerge.
“Real options” for what? I’m just not even sure what you hope to see happening right now or in the future. What does a “fixed world” even look like, to you?
I don’t know, I’ll know it when I see it. In the meantime, I find statistics-based optimistic cheerleading somewhere between unhelpful and a liability. I’m not a Rosling-Ridley-Pinker type.
That’s fair, I’m just curious. There’s definitely a lot of horrible shit happening right now to people, by people, and to all life and nature. I disagree that it’s unhelpful to point to the many positive trend lines, but I’m not prepared to try and convince u or any1 otherwise
I will say, even a cursory reading of history should show you there were many times humanity was in sorrier and more dire straights. That said, a 2nd Trump presidency or more competent demagogue with nukes is a terrifying prospect for the world.
