I’ve wondered the same thing. I think there’s an episode showing he was originally developing the portal gun for travel within C137 so it should work for that.
Rick and Morty question. They have a portal gun for parallel universes and a spaceship for in-c137 travel, but the spaceship never seems to go warp or do hyperspace. Is there any episode where we see how it travels? And is the portal gun ever used for in-c137 space/time travel?

Rick is aware he's on a TV show and makes certain choices to preserve the show's integrity such as: No time travel. Pretty sure I've seen the portal gun move them around within C-137. I think they use the spaceship to avoid being tracked or for the visuals (see: Rick self-aware).
