I took a more general lesson from it that what's relevant about something in a given situation is often more indirect than the superficial facts. So I thought of learning about the properties of "green lumber" to be a lesson about pedantry rather than intellectual curiosity.

But then again I'd be a liar to deny the anti-intellectual overtones, but I guess I ignore those because I don't even really buy that much into this street smarts narrative, I just think the "empty suits" are pedants who themselves don't actually think about things.

Agreed. Traders could be doing lots of things that are way more helpful to humanity. Especially since so many hard science and software PhD’s have been sucked up by trading firms
