If the Black Death is a good precedent there will be a serious shortage of low-wage labor for crappy jobs in a couple of years. Automation will overpromise and underdeliver in the medium term, Covid will have killed off many of the most desperate.

Iirc in Europe, East and West forked in the 14th century based on the response to the labor shortage. Western Europe invented individual rights and permanently weakened the nobility, while in Eastern Europe serfdom went brrr.

It's going to maybe half the size of the care home population worst case, and possibly give us a ton of people with weird, nasty lung, brain and heart issues to take care of for the next two decades And it might only be 10% of the total care home population at the end of the day

The US has also thrown in hostile immigration policies to the mix. Investment in automation should accelerate dramatically, especially with the onshoring of supply chains and manufacturing.
