Good question. My read is that many of the most precarious have not filed (and in some cases are not eligible to file) unemployment claims; they're still working -- stocking shelves, delivering packages, picking fruit, packing meat, operating cash registers etc.

Most filers are slightly less precarious, but not by much. So both filers and non-filers are doing all of what you say: adding credit card balances, reducing debt payments to monthly minimums, using food banks, moving into joint or family housing, re-negotiating rent etc.
