Both the people running these shitty operations and the people paying money to visit and get photo ops with cubs. Dozens of big cats in feed lots basically.

Ideally I’d like there to be enough wilderness for natural ecosystems to flourish, but I’ve made my peace with well-run zoos, staffed by biologists who both care and invest research effort at adequate scale. Amateurs running sentimental zoos of only charismatic megafauna, no.

For all it’s horrors, factory farming of livestock at least has a defensible purpose: food. Wild animals you don’t eat but just raise for narcissism (or just as bad, for exotic food/insane medicine as in China)... something really ugly about that.

Though it's hard to argue the US food system isn't somewhat luxury-oriented with our beef, seafood, etc. production/consumption not really being purely used as foodstuff.

My dream: Nuclear reactor process heat --> Haber-Bosch-esque syn-sugar production --> bioreactors making feedstocks/raw materials --> Matrix-like vertical farms using feedstocks + electric light --> processing --> all of our food sans animal sources, also no sun needed :D
