Weird question, but has the virus ruined any movies or tv shows for you? Stuff you liked a lot before but now seems cringe post-virus?

I tried watching Buffy and Glee and Firefly recently, seeking happy moments or escapism. But they felt flat; I'm no longer connected to the kind of meta and irony that let those worlds be light and fun.

I think entertainment that stressed "bad virus has R_0 = 50+ and kills immediately" seem cringy, since even R_0~2 sucks, and the slow and not-kill-too-many nature of COVID-19 makes it more sinister. It's like actually being dominated by a conman IRL vs seeing obv. ones on TV.

Star Trek. The delusion that we will transcend the petty struggle for survival on earth and become this high-minded egalitarian spacefaring collective

I always wondered if there was a Maoist Great Leap Forward moment in that universe.

I actually understand the Mad Max films on a much deeper level. Miller really did get something about trauma and brutalization, which informed his vision. makes a lot of subsequent, derivative, post-apocalyptic stuff seem tone-deaf exploitation.

Oh, and American Idol coerces singers to go without sleep/nutrition in close quarters in their "Hollywood Week." Always leads to sickness and injury. I no longer find that acceptable corporate behavior. The gov/employer compact has changed de facto, if not yet in law.

I bought a PS4 and it came with The Last Of Us. No damn way will I play that. Played Horizon: Zero Dawn and turns out to be the same damn story, but the aftermath. Don’t really need extra stress in my escapism diet.

I played The Last of Us all the way through over the last week and it was just that much more hauntingly immersive. Despite the times I do recommend it.
