My priors on China: most data coming out from party machine is from a story that was originally spun to keep the restive peasants in check domestically, and then repurposed shoddily to pass casual international scrutiny. Domestic elites bought off through complicity or threats.

Largely true, but a good chunk is actually distorted earlier—data massaged to keep the bureaucrats one level above you from hanging you out back.
