This is always true. Scratch a libertarian and you’ll find a post disaster authoritarian. It’s the same reason 90% of the people who read Atlas Shrugged think they are the 10% the world can’t live without. (The other 10% think “This prose sucks”)

The common theme is a refusal to accept the complexity of the world, an insistence that there is one simple way to organize the world that would get rid of all that messiness. What matters is not "Freedom" but the fantasy that the world is NOT immeasurably larger than me.
