I don’t get it! It seems like everything has played out about how we expected based on the Chinese numbers.

As you expected maybe. I think most leaders under-reacted in time and effort based on Chinese numbers seeming low.

How much is "wildly misreporting", numerically? My understanding is China's reports been as solid as west's, since national level took control late Jan. UK now under-reports deaths by 25%. Italy total 'excess' deaths appears 2x official Covid num. And how exactly throw off US?

Order of magnitude off is my guess

That was their reaction, we still don’t know how big the provocation was. Of course an authoritarian would do a draconian lockdown. It doesn’t reveal much. Their response to everything is draconian

I wouldn’t have been expected China to respond like that actually. I guess I should have, but I would not have. Also didn’t expect the US to lock down like this.

Not everybody. At least Korea and Taiwan did not miscalibrate and responded appropriately in retrospective. Their proximity and familiarity to China might be the reason. Plus, US cannot even muster enough response after Italy so it doesn’t matter tbh
