The O2 generator canisters are actually a fire hazard due to O2 produced from a chemical reaction that has to run its course, it's not a compressed bottle you turn on and off.
-
Is a fire hazard really the best option to have on a plane? When's the last time this equipment has been updated?

Without intubation you aerosol the virus and infect all the people around.

Not an entirely far-fetched idea! Seeing that at least a couple of other 'non-invasive respiratory devices,' including home CPAP machines and oxygen generators, are being authorized as emergency alternatives to ventilators, for instance ...https://www.fiercebiotech.com/medtech/fda-authorizes-cpap-machines-more-as-emergency-ventilator-alternatives …

A pretty desperate measure, though. People will die on these things who would have lived on a real ventilator. But hopefully a few will live who would have died on nothing but an O2 supply.

They’re only designed to provide oxygen for a matter of minutes, so doubtful

They provide oxygen but not enough pressure to push it down to the lungs like a ventilator does

Not without laboriously disassembling the places to remove single-use devices that iirc run hot and last maybe 20 minutes

The CPAP style facemasks create aerosols where/whenever the seal is broken (which is a lot when you move your face) and so make the wearer exponentially more infectious.
-
They also don't do enough to maintain the airway. A ventilator tube holds the airway open, and even has an inflatable bulb at the end to keep fluids from draining down into the lung. There's really very little similarity.
