This is v. similar to the D&D alignment chart which has two axes: good v evil + chaotic v lawful: good = benevolent evil = malevolent chaotic = spirit of law lawful = letter of law It’s interesting that these charts lined up—I find this chart useful for thinking about alignment
I disagree with your diagnosis of chaotic v. lawful, which I think is more about respect for social rules, norms etc. then whether you follow the spirit or letter of the law. Lawful good (imo) won't obey unjust law, though in opposing it it may choose to work within society.
What is it about Vetinari that makes them NOT the obvious choice? ie Why is the letter of the law so important to By-the-Book ("Paladin" jn D&D terms) types that they would choose a sub-optimal game theory outcome instead of a nash-equalibrium?
I wonder if it is because the Vetinari's values and principles are never completely legible nor constant. Therefore one cannot trust that at some point the Vetinari wont make decisions that are not just against one's benefit, but potentially existentially catastrophic.
Finland is by the book.
