lessons in storytelling: when you find yourself reaching for the "[they] had done X thing that set the scene for this thing that's about to happen", just go back to the proper place and put it there why have i been so foolish for so many years

the hero's journey is one thing, but another structure i'd like to read more on the epic. i suspect is has something to do with carefully placing symbols that you may not use for three or four cycles, but being diligent with a meaning-map so you find your way back. 🤔

Since I’ve mainly experimented with episodic function so far, with part n posted before part n+1 is conceived, I end up in a hard ratchet version of the pantser side of plotter/pantser divide. I’ve found improv a better approach to trying to plan the Chekhov-gunning too much

not sure what the chekhov gun of theoretical writing would be, except the conclusion offered up first and the rest an examination of the pieces and parts that made up the conclusion. which, tbh, i kind of prefer to meandering 😬
