I haven’t read all the studies, but is it possible that mass usage of surgical masks slows infections because it is prophylactic for people who are already infected*, rather than protective for non-infected people? *with or without symptoms

i thought at the time that it could be effective as a barrier even if imperfect, but was concerned that it might also increase the risk by working as a repository, making sure you wouldn't "miss" the virions you accidentally came in contact with. hard to know who/what to believe
