I think there’s a big story on the non-financial economy. What are you doing that’s keeping the economy spinning without activity being routed through the financial system? The thing I hate most about this situation is the the degree to which everything routes through dollars.

Barter almost requires physical contact. It's hard to avoid the power of the dollar's spooky action-at-a-distance right now. OTOH keeping the culture spinning is almost an anti-economic activity. My kid & his friends hold daily Minecraft playdates now; the $ spend is nothing.

Why is barter the only alternative to money? That’s just a failure of imagination. Software should allow us to transcend the bloody stupid money/barter dichotomy. Solve the coincidence of wants problem directly.

Money is just an abstraction for unit of value exchanged between people. You can’t get rid of the money without getting rid of value itself. If you have value, you need a way to measure and exchange it, and you’re right back into money again

That's when you run into a stretchy definition of money. Is bitcoin money? Are some not-money-branded crypto tokens? As long as you're assigning real life value to a unique unit of information, it's a form currency.

I think we're well into this already! There are so many different tokens and practices for the transfer of value online. Games' internal money systems, favour economies in affinity communities, cryptocurrency, likes. And sure, not all of them translate into groceries.

I don’t think there’s any there there other than collectivity. I guess you could look there.

David Graeber showed that the barter economy is a myth invented by textbook authors to justify money — and in particular, debt paid in money
